Introduction

On the western bank of the Sylva River sits the port town of Kungur, a small and old-fashioned fishing village on the outskirts of mid-19th century European civilization. It is surrounded on three sides by uncharted wilderness, and is home to a charming population of hard-working, extremely superstitious people.

According to the Kungur locals, the woods to the east of the river are haunted. Out in the wild unknown, there is rumored to exist a group of mythical creatures called the lykos. Anything to the north or east of the fishing town is the domain of these mysterious beings: demons, they say, in the form of wild wolves. Folklore states that these canines are mischievous, crafty, and intelligent; their most dangerous ability is that which allows them to disguise themselves as humans, which they do in order to carry out evil tasks.

Some believe the lykos are not evil at all. Instead, these creatures of myth might simply be the guardians of a wilderness untouched. Most, however, believe the opposite. Sightings of these lykos appear to be numerous and vary in believability; stories describe them as everything from simple thieves and poltergeists to nightmarish, horrifying figures in the dark. Brave adventurers -- locals and thrill-seeking tourists alike -- sometimes cross the river and venture into the woods in order to hunt these supposed demons of the devil. But regardless of the details, the lykos legend is an integral part of Kungur's culture. This out-of-the-way place is defined by the way it seems to skirt the boundary line between the real world and strange fantasy. It is on these terms we set our stage, and invite you to take part in a legendary conflict: one of tensions and uncertainty, between creatures of myth and the humans that fear them. It is a struggle without end, between the hunters and the hunted, among the leaders and the leaderless.
